Morelia festival adding competition

Contest will be open to first, second works

MEXICO CITY — The Morelia Intl. Film Festival, heading into its fifth year, is adding a Mexican features competition.

New competition will be open to first and second works, keeping the festivals focus on young filmmakers.

Fest previously held only shorts and docu competitions, although it had become a platform for preeming Mexican features out of competition. But with more than 80 features expected to be produced this year, fest director Daniela Michel decided to open the new section.

Fest, which has received help from both Cannes and Sundance organizers in putting it on the crowded festival calendar, runs from Oct. 5-14 in Morelia, Michoachan.

Last year’s winners, including docu “La palomilla salvaje” will unspool in Cannes, where Morelia sponsor and president Alejandro Ramirez, vp of Mexico’s biggest exhib chain Cinepolis, also sponsors the e5,000 Critics Week prize.
