Miramax to adopt ‘Boy’

Novel about orphans raised in 1741

Producers Scott Rudin and Allison Owen will turn Jamila Gavin’s novel “The Coram Boy” into a feature for Miramax Films.

Adaptation has been set as a co-production of Scott Rudin Prods., Owen’s Ruby Films and BBC Films, in partnership with Miramax and the U.K. Film Council.

Novel — which won the Whitbread Children’s Book Award — is an epic adventure about orphans raised in Britain’s Coram hospice in 1741.

Novel was separately turned into a play by Helen Edmundson that was a hit at London’s National Theater and opens May 2 at Broadway’s Imperial Theater.

Rudin exec produced and Owen produced “The Other Boleyn Girl,” a period drama starring Eric Bana, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. They also are producing a screen adaptation of Zadie Smith’s novel “On Beauty.”
