Media program gives millions to Brits

Over six years, films received 39.5 mil euros

British film and TV companies received €39.5 million from Europe’s Media program in the past six years, with British movies also getting an additional €29.6 million in distribution support outside the U.K.

The U.K. Film Council unveiled this analysis of Blighty’s benefit from the program to coincide with the official launch in Berlin Saturday of the new Media 2007, which has a budget of €755 million over the next seven years to support the film and TV biz across Europe. From 2001 to 2006, €22.3 million went to British producers, with distrubutors, training bodies, exhibs, fests and promotion receiving the balance.

Writer/director Duane Hopkins, for example, won the Media New Talent Prize at Cannes in 2004 for his script “Better Things.” That movie is now in post-production, cofinanced by the U.K. Film Council’s New Cinema Fund.
