Mar del Plata festival eyes fall dates

Event shirts from March to October

The Mar del Plata Intl. Film Festival, Latin America’s only FIAPF class A event, plans to shift from March to October in a bid to attract better titles and foreign talent.

“We are waiting for approval of the dates,” fest director and vet helmer Jose A. Martinez Suarez told Variety on the sidelines of the San Luis Cine Intl. Festival, which is unspooling Nov. 16-25 in this central Argentinean city.

He is aiming for Oct. 2-12 rather than March when the fest is sandwiched between Berlin in February and Cannes in May.

Martinez Suarez, 83, replaces Miguel Pereira (“El Destino”), who ran the fest for five years. He said Mar del Plata would continue to focus on Latin American cinema as under Pereira.
