BERLIN — Lionsgate has acquired the BBC natural history doc “Earth” for distribution in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia.
Directed by Alastair Fothergill, the movie is being prepped for release this fall.
It explores the influence of the sun on the life of earth, by following three animal families as they take astonishing journeys across the globe.
A TV series on the same theme, shot by the same team, has already been broadcast.
But unlike the previous BBC movie “Deep Blue,” which was made by the same team by recutting their TV series “Blue Planet,” the movie of “Earth” was made in parallel with the TV series, rather than subsequent to it.
Pic is being sold by BBC Worldwide and German outfit Greenlight Media.
“Earth” has already been acquired by Universum in Germany, Gaga in Japan, Gaumont in France, Wanda in Spain, Frenetic in Switzerland and Audio Visual/Prooptiki in Greece.
