Comic turns 'funny into money' with 'Chronicles'
Williams’ “Pimp Chronicles, Part 2” tour earlier this year sold out shows in every major market across the country.
While the 34-year-old comic was out on the road, an estimated 3.6 million HBO viewers watched Williams’ “The Pimp Chronicles, Part 1,” making it one of the pay cabler’s highest-rated comedy specials in the last two years. “Chronicles” DVD sales, meanwhile, have gone triple platinum.
Williams has also found time to appear in a number of features, starting with a role alongside Eddie Murphy in “Norbit.” Upcoming, he’ll be featured in “A Perfect Holiday” opposite Queen Latifah and Terrence Howard. He’ll also star alongside Ice Cube in “First Sunday,” playing a criminal duo determined to rip off their own church.
Williams also has two-pic deals with Sony’s Screen Gems, DreamWorks and Our Stories Films. He also has another DVD in the queue, “Katt Williams: American Hustle,” arriving next week.
Point of view
“The two-picture deals allow us to put up or shut up,” Williams says. “We’ve got a couple of chances to make our partners happy. We’re just about the funny. Fortunately, the trick is for us to turn the funny into money. That’s what we do.”
