'Shootout' to film on location at Czech festival

The Karlovy Vary Film Festival announced today that Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart would serve as this year’s president of the Grand Jury.

Fest, which unspools June 29-July 7 in the storied Czech spa town near Prague, will present some 220 features from around the world, including the official competition Bart will oversee.

Bart also will be on hand to moderate a discussion that accompanies the fest’s New Hollywood retrospective section, which will include eight key films of the ’60s and ’70s, with filmmakers in attendance.

This year’s Karlovy Vary also marks the 10th anniversary of the Variety Critics’ Choice official section of the fest, which annually presents 10 recent films that Variety critics, under the direction of senior film critic Derek Elley, choose as the best in new European filmmaking. Presented in conjunction with European Film Promotion, this year’s Critics’ Choice screenings and festivities also will be co-hosted by HBO Czech Republic.

Bart will be in Karlovy Vary with the location production of his AMC program, “Shootout,” which this year has gone on the road to festivals around the world in partnership with Variety.com. More details on this partnership and future fest plans will be announced when “Shootout” is in production this month in Cannes.

Past winners of the fest’s top Crystal Globe award that have gone on to international acclaim include last year’s “Sherrybaby”; “Nowhere in Africa,” which won the 2002 foreign-language Oscar; and global arthouse hit “Amelie.”
