BERLIN — Spain’s Kanzaman has teamed with L.A.-based Nimbus Pictures to produce “Nuvolari,” an action drama with political and romantic heft, about legendary Italian 1930s auto racer Tazio Nuvolari.
Despite driving an obselete Alfa Romeo, Nuvolari beat the more powerful, Nazi-financed Silver Arrows at the 1935 German Grand Prix.
He benefited from modifications made to his Alfa by a young Enzo Ferrari, who, inspired by the victory, went on to found his own company.
The screenplay is by David Baxter and Michael Wright, with Baxter re-writing under the supervision of Jose Rivera (“The Motorcycle Diaries”).
Kanzaman topper Denise O’Dell, who co-produced “Sahara” and “Kingdom of Heaven,” will produce with Nimbus partner Lisa Taback. Nimbus and Kanzaman were brought together by New York-based Rose Ganguzza, who will exec produce.
The producers are selecting a director, O’Dell said at Berlin.
No budget was announced, but pic will need a lot of coin as producers intend to cast a Hollywood name actor as Nuvolari, and recreate the swanky world of 1930s racing, filming at tracks across Europe and using vintage cars and working replicas.
