Hirshfield is a new Participant

Film company launches publishing division

Participant Prods. has tapped Lynn Hirshfield to launch a new publishing division intended to support the company’s films and social-action campaigns.

As VP of business development, Hirshfield will lead the development of strategic marketing partnerships.

She’ll report directly to Participant co-heads of marketing Buffy Shutt and Kathy Jones.

Hirshfield worked with Participant as a consultant for much of 2006 on the social marketing and outreach for Oscar-winning docu “An Inconvenient Truth,” which Participant financed and produced.

Hirshfield’s done much the same thing for a number of Internet content and tech startups, as well as studios and venture capital groups. She has worked as a story editor for National Geographic Films, Scott Rudin, Norman Lear and Tim Burton, along with Sony, Fox and Warner Bros.

In 2006, Hirshfield published her first children’s book, “Sassafras: True Confessions of a Poodle Princess,” which was directly inspired by Participant’s mandate to use media for social change. A sequel, “Sassafras Goes to Hollywood,” hit the stands this month.

Upcoming Participant releases include Mike Nichols’ “Charlie Wilson’s War” and Marc Forster’s “The Kite Runner.”
