Handmade doubles sales target

Company rings up more than $50 mil

LONDON — Handmade Films Intl. racked up over $50 million in sales at the recent Cannes market, more than double the company’s target.

The lion’s share of that figure reportedly came from a single deal, Sony’s multi-territory pre-buy of Paul W.S. Anderson’s “The Long Good Friday.”

Handmade also closed deals in more than 20 territories for the $54 million animated movie “Planet One,” including sales to Entertainment Film Distributors in the U.K. and Italian Intl. Films in Italy.

It signed output deals for its entire slate with MGN Paradise in Russia, VTI in the former Yugoslavia and ECS Film Distribution in the Middle East.

Handmade Films Intl. chairman Guy Collins commented, “The sales volume achieved at Cannes underpins HFI’s planned growth for the next two years through the combination of sales fees and producer and financing fees. The results at Cannes exceeded our target by more than 100% and were the best results experienced by myself and Michael Ryan in the 30 years we have each been involved in this industry.”
