BERLIN — Sinbad may finally get its first-ever treatment in Arabic. Egyptian shingle Good News is planning to produce a pic about the legendary sailor — and is in Berlin to find co-producers for the $10 million project.
“There has never been an Arab version of Sinbad. Every film has been American or European but this is an Arab story. People need to see it from our point of view,” said Emad Adeeb
Good News is also hoping to lure hip-shaking songstress Shakira, herself of Lebanese-Colombian origin, for the plum role of Jasmin, with Arab pop star Amr Diab in the globe-trotting title role.
Execs hope to start shooting in summer next year, with Egypt and India tapped for locations.
“We want to make two versions, one in English and one in Arabic. This could be a like Arabic ‘King Kong’.”
Good News made a splash at last year’s Berlinale with the world preem of “The Yacoubian Building.” Pic, at the time Arab biz’s most costly feature at $4 million, went on to break box office records and taboos in its native Egypt on its release last summer.
