Femmes cuddle with Teddy awards

'Spider' takes best film, doc 'Walk' also feted

Friday was girls’ night at the Berlinale Teddy awards for gay pics, with best film going to Zero Chou for “Ci-Qing” (Spider Lilies), about a girl coming out in the age of the Internet.

Doc award went to Esther Robinson for her elegy to her vanished uncle, “A Walk into the Sea: Danny Williams and the Warhol Factory.”

The audience prize went to “Notes on a Scandal” starring Judi Dench as a lesbian teacher.

In the boy’s department, “La Leon” by Santiago Otheguy, received a special mention for cinematography and thesp Helmut Berger was honored for life achievement.

The jury regretted that there were no short films eligible for a Teddy but gave a special mention to two public service announcements shown in various Panorama screenings, “Uberwachungskamera (Security Camera)” and “Love Hurts,” made as part of the Stop Violence Against Gays Project.

Meanwhile, helmer Jiri Menzel’s “I Served the King of England,” about an ambitious Prague waiter who climbs the social ladder to become a collaborator during the Nazi occupation, won the Berlinale Fipresci prize for Competition film.

In the Panorama section, Ozer Kiziltan’s Turkish drama “Takva — A Man’s Fear of God,” about a man whose faith is challenged by his social status, took the international critics’ award.

Ann-Kristin Reyel’s German family drama “Hounds” won in the Forum sidebar.
