‘Disengagement’ set for Venice

Callas documenary also added to Lido lineup

Amos Gitai’s political drama “Disengagement,” centered around Israel’s 2005 pullout from the occupied Gaza strip, will world preem at the upcoming Venice Film Festival.

Studio Canal title, starring Juliette Binoche as a French woman of Israeli origin who returns to the West Bank amid military turmoil, has secured an out-of-competish berth at the Lido, as a late addition to the official selection.

Pic by Gitai, who is a longtime Venice aficionado, will segue from the Lido to Toronto.

Venice has also announced another latecomer to its lineup: Maria Callas docu “Callas assoluta,” by Gallic helmer Philippe Kohly, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the famed soprano’s death. Reconstruction of how Callas became a legend, featuring footage set in New York, Athens, Italy and Paris, has been added to Venice’s Horizons sidebar.

Following the Lido world bow, “Callas” will unspool at Milan’s La Scala opera house as part of more extensive Callas commemorations.

The Venice fest runs Aug. 29-Sept. 8.
