Directors share limelight at Cannes gala

Fest centerpiece: 'Cinema' omnibus screening

One director is usually center stage on the red carpet each night, but tonight dozens will share the limelight for the Cannes Film Festival’s 60th anni celebrations.

Centerpiece of the festivities will be the gala screening of the omnibus film “To Each His Own Cinema,” which contains 33 three-minute films from directors ranging from Theo Angelopoulos to Zhang Yimou.

Latter helmer is one of only two contributors who won’t be attending. He’s working on the Beijing Olympic Games, while Lars von Trier isn’t coming because of his fear of flying.

But all the rest are expected to attend, along with others including Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton and Jim Jarmusch.

Fest president Gilles Jacob has decreed the anniversary should be about feting the directors who have made Cannes what it is — rather than a moment of self-congratulation.

Pre-screening ceremony, involving helmers on stage, has been directed by Canadian theater director Robert Carsen.

After-party will take place at a new venue for the festival — La Roseraie, a public rose garden away from the Croisette’s madding crowds.
