Studio plans early 2008 start date

Helmer Steve Carr is on the beat for Columbia Pictures’ Kevin James comedy “Mall Cop.”

Story centers on a mild-mannered security guard (James) thrust into action when highly organized thieves take over his mall. Steve Pink (“High Fidelity”) wrote the most recent draft, while James penned an earlier version with Nick Bakay.

Studio is eyeing an early 2008 start date.

Sony-based Happy Madison is producing alongside James, Jeff Sussman and Todd Garner.

Carr most recently directed the Ice Cube starrer “Are We Done Yet?” His credits also include “Daddy Day Care,” “Dr. Dolittle 2” and “Next Friday.”
