Berlin church hosts ‘Earth’

Philharmonic Orchestra records film score

BERLIN — The Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin’s tony Dahlem district was the venue for Sunday’s recording session by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for the BBC Worldwide and Greenlight Media feature-length natural history documentary, “Earth.”

Helmed by Alastair Fothergill, “Earth” follows polar bears, elephants and humpback whales as they face a migratory existence in a world that is fast-changing.

Scored and conducted by multi-Oscar nommed George Fenton “Earth” marks his second collaboration with the Berlin Philharmonic following 2003’s “Deep Blue,” the first time the orchestra had ever recorded a film score.

Founded in 1882, the orchestra has performed under the baton of greats such as Herbert von Karajan and Simon Rattle. The current conductor is Pamela Rosenberg

The Jesus-Christus-Kirche was a favorite recording venue of von Karajan’s, having been discovered by his predecessor, Wilhelm Furtwaengler, and is famed for its extraordinary acoustics.
