Banderas teams up with Maestranza

Co.'s films to feature Andalusian talent

BERLIN — Antonio Banderas’ Spain-based production shingle, Green Moon Producciones, is teaming with Maestranza Films to produce films featuring new directors and talent drawn from his native Andalusia.

Headed by 20-year-vet Antonio Perez, and based out of Seville, Maestranza scored an international hit with the feature film debut of Benito Zambrano, “Solas” (Alone). Green Moon also has offices in Malaga.

Producer-composer Antonio Meliveo will produce with Banderas for Green Moon.

Green Moon and Maestranza have yet to select their first pic, but they aim to make one a year, beginning, if possible, this year.

Project also is aimed at discovering new actors and screenwriters and giving local technicians the chance to move up to key crew posts.

“New talents are emerging in Andalucia. We’d like to expand and deepen the process,” said Perez.

“There’s a huge number of Andalusians working in economical formats. We aim to harness some of this young energy,” Meliveo added.

Banderas and Perez also are talking over the possibility of co-producing each other’s projects.

As a director or actor, Banderas aims to reactivate a project for a bio on Boabdil, the last Moorish King of Granada. Project is at research stage.

“The idea is to show how, for eight centuries, Christians, Moors and Jews lived together in peace in Andalusia,” Meliveo said.

Banderas also is keen to direct a low-budget theater-style chamber piece, exploring the relations between a man and a woman.

Zambrano’s gritty mother-daughter drama “Solas” brought down the flag on a new generation of Andalusian helmers, including pop art specialist Santi Amodeo (“Doghead”), and social realists Alberto Rodriguez (“7 Virgins”) and Jesus Ponce (“15 Days With You”).

Jaime Marques’ “Ladrones,” which bows at March’s Malaga fest and is produced by Maestranza, is one of the most-awaited debuts of the year.

Banderas has two pics at Berlin: his sophomore directorial outing “Summer Rain,” featuring a large cast of new Andalusian thesps, which he presented Tuesday in Panorama, and Gregory Nava’s competish player “Bordertown.”

Perez moved $9 million “La Roldana,” to be directed by Laura Mana, at the Berlinale Co-Production Market. Paz Vega is under consideration for the lede.
