The Weinstein Co.’s urban banner Our Stories Films has set one of its inaugural projects, signing the duo behind TV hit “Girlfriends” to produce, write and direct.
Husband-and-wife team Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil will pen and helm, respectively, a pic about a woman who starts a business to investigate the mates of high-powered women after she herself is left at the altar.
Both will also produce the film, which is based on an idea by Priya Scroggins and Capricorn Clark.
As-yet-untitled project is said to be in fast-track development, though no official greenlight has been given.
Mara Brock Akil exec produces and writes the femme ensemble sitcom “Girlfriends” as well as its spinoff, “The Game,” both of which air on the CW. Salim Akil has directed numerous episodes of both series.
The Our Stories project, the first theatrical for both, will be produced through the duo’s Happy Camper Prods. banner, which the couple is seeking to expand in television and theatrical realms.
Our Stories prexy Tracey Edmonds said that label was attracted to the project because Brock Akil offers “a smart, humorous but accurate perspective on modern-day singledom and dating.” Movie will reteam Edmonds with Salim Akil, who collaborated on Showtime’s “Soul Food” skein.
Our Stories Films was created last year by the Weinsteins and BET founder Robert Johnson as the first label at a studio or mini-major devoted to releasing movies for black auds. Pics, which are expected to land in the $10 million-$15 million budget range, will be released through the Weinsteins’ Dimension label.
Akils’ pic is the second announced project on the Our Stories slate after “Who’s Your Caddy?,” a Big Boi vehicle about a rap mogul trying to gain access to a country club, which opens in July.
