Palm Springs opens with ‘Found’

Helen Hunt's directorial debut kicks off festival

The Palm Springs Film Festival will open with Helen Hunt’s directorial debut “Then She Found Me,” which ThinkFilm picked up in Toronto.

The fest will also bestow its American Maverick Award upon John Sayles following a screening of his latest film, “Honeydripper,” about the birth of rock ‘n’ roll in a small town.

Also announced Tuesday were several galas focusing on award-winning international cinema. Among the screenings, Fatih Akin’s “The Edge of Heaven,” Joseph Cedar’s “Beaufort” and Danielle Luchetti’s “My Brother Is an Only Child” drew honors in their respective countries of Germany, Israel and Italy. The fest will also highlight Israeli cinema in a special showcase, including Eran Kolirin’s “The Band’s Visit” and Nadav Schirman’s doc “The Champagne Spy.”

Palm Springs runs Jan. 3-14.
