Letter to the Editor: Daniel Melnick

Looking at the issue honoring the recipients of the Women’s Impact Awards (Daily Variety, July 31), I was thrilled to see that there were so many women deserving such special acknowledgement and that the establishment of the awards was timely and justified.

To the same degree that I was delighted at the honors bestowed, I was equally disappointed to see that there were so few women of color among the group.

I don’t believe that they were “overlooked.” Sad to say, I don’t think that more exist in the industry today.

Shame on all of us. Years ago, when I first became able to affect the hiring of people, I set out to correct the overt discrimination directed at women in our “business.”

I have no illusions. Regardless of the bows I took or how self-congratulatory I felt, I and the others who joined me were acting in our self-interest. These awards are just the latest in what could be 25 years of comparable acknowledgments.

Now, let’s pick up the initiative and do some more long overdue self-serving, this time in the area of race.
