From the Army Archerd Archive

July 28, 1967

Jerry Lewis agreed to the current hospital stand and tests (after four years’ urging by his medic) when he discovered it would involve using a camera the size of a pin. When wheeled into the surgery for the pictures, Jerry broke up the medical team by singing, “Hi neighbors, etc.” And yesterday when we called, he answered the phone with, “Rexall Drugs –” … He’s due to depart Good Sam today, meet with Bob Finkel and Dave Tebet for the Aug. 7 rehearsal start of his first NBC show … (2007 Update: Jerry Lewis, 81, is feeling a-OK. He has dropped the final 23 pounds, readying Sunday’s start of the 52nd Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon — which has raised more that $2 billion. Jerry will sing, joke with the dozens of participants including Celine Dion — and the Flying Elvi . The telethon emanates from the South Point Hotel in Vegas After the show he’ll resume work on the Broadway-bound musical “Nutty Professor” with Marvin Hamlisch tuning … Ed McMahon, Lewis’ “anchor man” on this, his 40th MDA, reports working with Jerry today is again “like holding onto a bullet.” McMahon (84) follows the telethon with cross-country treks for his show, “Memories of the ‘Tonight Show.” … When I told Bob Finkel about the above column, he recalled, “Dave Tebet and I flew to Las Vegas where we wrote (with lipstick) the NBC contract with Jerry on the mirrors of his dressing room. He signed the contract giving me script and casting approvals.. We took a Polaroid picture. And Jerry stood by the contract and we had two wonderful years.”
