'Planet B-Boy' screens at festival

Beijing body-popped and break-danced as Gotham’s Tribeca Film Festival made its Chinese debut in the capital’s decidedly boho 798 art district July 10.

in the balmy Beijing night watch an outdoor screening of “Planet B-Boy” by Benson Lee, a documentary about the resurgence of break-dancing, which preemed at the 2007 Tribeca fest.

Screening was followed by a block party, attended by local film stars and residents.

“The red carpet was the smallest dimension for us. We appreciate the celebrity dimension but we wanted something more grassroots,” said Grace Chen, managing director of William Morris Agency China, which organized the event with Tribeca Enterprises and China Interactive Media Group (CIMG).

“We wanted to bring the Tribeca brand to China, but the question was how to do that. We thought about the Shanghai Film Festival, but in the end, decided Beijing was closer to what we were thinking,” she said.
