R-rated comedy on top Friday with $12 million

Sony’s “Superbad” scored on Friday, chalking up an estimated $12 million in 2,948 theaters.

Among previous R-rated comedy bows in August, “Superbad’s” haul is in sync with the $12.2 million generated by 2003’s “American Wedding” on its first Friday, and bests the $7 million posted by Judd Apatow’s 2005 directorial debut “The 40 Year-Old Virgin.” At $16.5 million, 2001’s “American Pie 2” holds the Friday record for an R-rated August comedy.

“Rush Hour 3” slowed in its second Friday with $6.4 million from 3,778 theaters, off 66% from a week ago.

U’s “The Bourne Ultimatum” took third with an estimated $5.6 million from 3,701 venues while the Nicole Kidman–Daniel Craig sci-fi thriller “The Invasion” placed fourth with $2 million off 2,776.

“The Simpsons Movie” rounded out fifth with $1.9 million from 3,162 playdates.

Among other frosh entries yesterday, the Weinstein Company’s “The Last Legion” posted an estimated $871,000 at 2,002 theaters, while Frank Oz’s Blighty laffer “Death at a Funeral” awoke $341,000 at 260 engagements.
