It’s going to be a tough summer for nontentpole pics if the “Spider-Man 3” opening weekend is any indicator.
And if “Lucky You” is an example of the type of counterprogramming to be had, it’s a gloomy portent.
Warner Bros.’ “Lucky You,” the frame’s only other new wide opener, was anything but lucky, bowing in sixth place with $2.5 million. Pic, starring Drew Barrymore and Eric Bana, opened widely in 2,525 theaters for a limp per-location average of just $996.
“Spider-Man 3” dominated the landscape, but Paramount and DreamWorks’ teen thriller “Disturbia” continued to play well, landing in second place to raise its cume to just under $60 million in four weekends of release. Pic held the top spot at the domestic B.O. for three straight weekends before Spidey arrived.
New Line’s legal thriller “Fracture” dipped 50% in its third frame. Pic has taken in $26.4 million to date.
Other recent pics also saw ticket sales slide sharply.
In its second weekend, Disney’s “The Invisible” fell by 60%, taking in $3.1 million to raise its cume to $12.3 million.
Nicolas Cage starrer “Next” fell by more than 60%. Pic has conjured up $11.8 million in two weeks.
