Winick wins AFI Alumni Medal

Award named for late director Schaffner

Director-producer Gary Winick has been selected as this year’s AFI Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal winner.

Kudo for AFI alums is named for the late director and celebrates those who share his “talent, taste, dedication and commitment to quality filmmaking.” Prior recipients of the medal include David Lynch, Terrence Malick, Amy Heckerling and Darren Aronofsky.

Winick and Independent Digital Entertainment (InDigEnt), a company which he co-created, have produced films like Ethan Hawke’s “Chelsea Walls,” Richard Linklater’s “Tape” and Steve Buscemi’s “Lonesome Jim.” Winick’s directing credits include “Tadpole,” “13 Going on 30,” “Charlotte’s Web” and the pilot for the NBC skein “Lipstick Jungle” starring Brooke Shields.

Winick will receive the kudos at the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Tribute to Al Pacino at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater Thursday.
