The Tony Awards administration committee held its first meeting for the upcoming Broadway season on Tuesday, approving the decision to add two new categories to the 2008 kudos, for sound design of a play and of a musical.
Those additional tech nods will bring the number of competitive categories to 27.
Legit pundits have long debated the need to add sound honors to the Tony roster, along with other craft and creative contributions including casting; ensemble kudos; and a separate nod for lyrics, currently covered by the score award.
Despite a dip in ratings for the recent Tonycast, which went up against the farewell episode of “The Sopranos,” the committee confirmed that the 62nd awards will again air live in a three-hour ceremony on CBS. Date has yet to be locked down.
The new Broadway season vying for next year’s Tonys gets under way this month with Roundabout’s revival of “Old Acquaintance,” opening June 28 at the American Airlines Theater. Margaret Colin and Harriet Harris star.
