Tang Wei

Actress, 'Lust, Caution'

Tang, who hails from Hangzhou, China, had never acted in a feature nor known the work of Ang Lee before she auditioned for the director’s latest, “Lust, Caution.” The theater graduate not only landed the lead, but carries the film on her shoulders. As a young drama student (art imitating life?) who plays a role within a role to ensnare a Japanese collaborator in Japanese-occupied Shanghai, Tang must use her feminine wiles, even though she’s practically a virgin. “It’s her power,” Lee explains. “In Chinese teachings, the word ‘lust’ also means color. … Any projection of emotion or desire, they are a reflection of the truth — not the truth itself but a mirroring of the truth. She embodied that theme so much.”
