‘Rocket’ pockets 9 Genies

'Cop' nabs top award at Canadian awards

TORONTO — French-Canadian feature fare continues to dominate Canadian kudos as well as at the B.O., with “The Rocket,” a biopic about hockey icon Maurice Richard, sweeping Canada’s Genie Awards, the local equivalent of the Oscars.

Pic took nine statuettes at a Toronto gala Tuesday, including nods for art direction, costume design, cinematography, editing and sound editing. Charles Biname received the Genie for his direction of the French-language pic, Roy Dupuis and Julie Le Breton took top thesping statuettes and Stephen McHattie won for his supporting role.

Best picture nod went to bilingual action-comedy “Bon Cop, Bad Cop.” Montreal-made pic also took the award for sound and was the Golden Reel Award winner for top B.O. “Bon Cop” has broken Canada’s homegrown B.O. record, previously held by Bob Clark’s “Porky’s,” with a take of C$12 million ($10.3 million).

Carrie-Anne Moss took the award for supporting actress for her turn in Marc Evans’ drama “Snow Cake.”

Philippe Falardeau received the award for original screenplay for “Congorama,” which he also directed, and Robert Favreau and Gil Courtemanche won for adapted screenplay for “Un dimanche a Kigali,” directed by Favreau.

Jennifer Baichwal’s “Manufactured Landscapes” took the documentary nod and Oscar-nommed “The Danish Poet,” directed by Torill Kove, won for animated short.

The Genie Awards are handed out by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, with highlights broadcast on the Chum Television network across the country as well as Bravo and MusiMax.
