Quills Awards unveils nominations

Prizes for 18 categories will be voted on panel

The Quill Awards on Saturday revealed the five nominees in each of 18 categories for which prizes are handed out.

Noms in the fiction category are “Brothers,” “American Youth,” “The Road,” “Special Topics in Calamity Physics” and “Jamestown”; “Physics” is set up as a film project with Scott Rudin and Miramax.

A Quill nod also will be handed out for the best book-to-film project of the past year, with the award sponsored by Variety. Last year, Lauren Weisberger’s fashion-world tell-all “The Devil Wears Prada” nabbed the prize.

Prizes for the 18 categories will now be voted on by a panel of more than 6,000 booksellers and librarians, with the winners unveiled Sept. 10. The public also will vote, choosing one title from among the 18 winners, for the additional prize of Book of the Year.

Noms were announced Saturday at book biz confab BookExpo America.

The Quills are run by Variety parent company Reed Business Information and overseen by sister pub Publishers Weekly. The Quills also runs a separate nonprofit foundation that promotes literacy.

Kudos will be held Oct. 22 at Frederick P. Rose Hall in Gotham. A kudocast produced by Al Roker Entertainment airs Oct. 27 on NBC O&Os and will be streamed online at MSNBC.com.
