You wouldn’t be alone if you did a double-take when you heard “Click” announced as an Oscar nominee for makeup this year. While the movie fast-forwarded Adam Sandler from 36 to 63, aging characters is supposed to be old hat, right?Not according to nominees Bill Corso and Kazuhiro Tsuji. They claim their use of new silicone appliances is one of the biggest advances in makeup since rubber pieces were introduced, around the time of “The Wizard of Oz.” Their technique relies on cutting-edge advances in silicone used for medical prosthetics. “The trick has been refining it so that we could actually make things become invisible on an actor and hold up for an entire day of shooting,” Corso says. “What Kazuhiro did was make it much more user-friendly so we could paint them on an actor’s face.” (Tsuji employed the same principles to transform Eddie Murphy into a really big woman in “Norbit.”) Though Corso and Tsuji seamlessly aged several of the “Click” cast, they probably deserve a prize just for dealing with the admittedly fidgety Sandler during the middle of a Yankees playoff run. “He’s a big-time sports guy, so I would literally be trying to put these really intricate pieces on him while he was pacing the trailer and screaming at the TV,” Corso recalls. Why it’ll win: If the tally were just among makeup professionals, the breakthrough of using the new silicone applications to realistically age the cast of “Click” could certainly push it to a win. Why it won’t: Few members of the Academy will get an in-depth tutorial on the “Click” team’s achievements.
