Mira Nair

Gotham Tribute

It’s been 20 years since Nair filmed her Oscar-nominated first feature, “Salaam Bombay!” Two decades later she has eight features under her belt, including indie breakout “Monsoon Wedding” and this year’s “The Namesake.” Born in India, Nair now lives in Gotham but has incorporated Indian culture into many of her films, including her (strike-delayed) project, Johnny Depp drama “Shantaram,” about a heroin addict who reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay.

Nair says IFP helped her pic career. “They taught me it was possible to make independent cinema. So being honored by them is like when a student comes back to her school and the teacher salutes the student.”
