Michael Winterbottom

Director, 'A Mighty Heart'

Ever the playful postmodernist, British helmer Winterbottom has always toyed with the real and the staged, mixing documentary and faux documentary to both humorous (“Tristram Shandy,” “24 Hour Party People”) and horrifying (“The Road to Guantanamo”) effect. So it’s notable that to tackle Mariane Pearl’s account of the search for her kidnapped journalist husband Daniel, Winterbottom plays it straight, filming with a verite sense of urgency and immediacy. As he inches the story toward its tragic end without betraying any sense of inevitability, Winterbottom makes the heartbreak feel all too real.
