‘Look’ nabs top prize at CineVegas

Rifkin's feature wins grand jury prize

LAS VEGAS — Adam Rifkin’s “Look” took home the grand jury prize as the 9th annual CineVegas Film Festival announced its filmmaking honors at a ceremony on June 16.

As directed by Rifkin, “Look” is shot entirely from the surveillance camera point of view. The film gives us a glimpse of ordinary people who have no inkling that they are under the watchful eye of hundreds of surveillance cameras that constantly record their everyday movements.

The feature jury was presided over by producer Effie T. Brown; Screen International’s U.S. editor Mike Goodridge; Andy Klein, editor and chief critic for Los Angeles CityBeat; and Scott Macaulay, New York-based producer and co-prexy of “Forensic Films” and editor-co-founder “Filmmaker Magazine.”

Other fest winners included “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” which received a special jury award for directing for helmer Joy Dietrich. “All God’s Children Can Dance” garnered a special jury award for distinctive visual expression and was directed by Robert Logevall.

Sin City crowds anointed “I Have Never Forgotten You: The Life and Legacy of Simon Wiesenthal” and “Throwing Stars” with the audience awards for documentary and narrative Features, respectively.

A political doc, Richard Trank’s “I Have Never Forgotten You: The Life and Legacy of Simon Wiesenthal” examines the Austrian-Jewish architectural engineer who became a Nazi hunter after surviving the Holocaust. While in “Throwing Stars,” director Todd Breau examines the bond between four childhood friends whose friendship is severely tested when they need to cover up a murder.

Fest’s new program blocks that focuses on Mexican cinema, La Proxima Ola, gave its jury prize to “Bad Habits” (Malos Habitos), directed by Simon Bross. Film revolves around three women whose eating habits determine and dominate their lives.

Jennifer Aniston and Andrea Buchanan’s “Room 10” and David Schmoeller’s “Spanking Lessons” received the CineVegas Nevada short film jury prize.

The 11-day CineVegas film fest wrapped Saturday. For a complete list of CineVegas winners, visit Variety.com/cinevegas.
