Pair sign on for Weinstein Co. film
Nicole Kidman and Ralph Fiennes will star in love story “The Reader” for the Weinstein Co.
Stephen Daldry will direct David Hare’s adaptation of the bestselling novel by German writer Bernhard Schlink.
Mirage Prods. partners Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack are producing with Scott Rudin. Shooting begins in Berlin in late September.
The setting is contemporary Germany, where a man recounts the story of his erotic awakening in a covert love affair with an older woman in the wake of WWII.
Minghella and Pollack acquired the book, an international bestseller published in the U.S. by Pantheon, and invited Rudin and the others aboard.
Project reunites several of the creatives. Kidman, Daldry, Hare and Rudin last collaborated on “The Hours,” for which the actress won an Oscar. She has worked with Minghella on “Cold Mountain” and Pollack on “The Interpreter.” Fiennes starred for Minghella in “The English Patient.”
Kidman just opened alongside Daniel Craig in “The Invasion” and follows with the Rudin-produced “Margot at the Wedding” and then “The Golden Compass.” Fiennes was just seen as Lord Voldemort in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”
