Winners announced at ceremony on Sunday

Director Ilya Chaiken received the best picture award for her feature “Liberty Kid” as the eighth annual New York Latino Film Festival announced its award winners at a ceremony on Sunday.

Pic concerns the post-9/11 lives of inner-city teenagers.

Alexandre Fuchs’ film about street gang MS-13, “Hijos de la guerra” (Children of the War), drew documentary kudos, while Ciro Altabas’ “DVD” won for short.

Sergio Castilla earned a Heineken Red Star award for his direction of “Take the Bridge,” and Will Fonesca’s “Rewind” took the audience-selected Verizon On the Edge short film award.

Fest was launched in 1999.
