Drama League honors best of year

'Spring,' 'Utopia' honored with top trophies

“Spring Awakening” and “The Coast of Utopia” each picked up another legit laurel Friday, scoring the Drama League Award for musical and play, respectively, at the League’s 73rd annual ceremony.

Revival trophies went to helmer David Grindley’s production of the 1928 R.C. Sherriff play “Journey’s End” and John Doyle’s staging of the 1970 Stephen Sondheim-George Furth tuner “Company.”

Acting award went to Liev Schreiber for his perf as a volatile radio host in the current revival of Eric Bogosian’s “Talk Radio.” Each year the League recognizes a slew of actors — 78 this year — but honors only one with an award, which a thesp may win only once.

League award is the first of the seasonal round of kudos to be given for acting. Next up is the Outer Critics May 14.

Both “Spring Awakening” and “Coast” nabbed a New York Drama Critics Circle Award May 7, and “Journey’s End” picked up a special citation from the org. In addition, “Spring,” also eligible for the Lucille Lortel Awards due to its pre-Rialto run Off Broadway, shared (with “In the Heights”) a Lortel for tuner earlier this week.

The League considers both Broadway and Off Broadway productions for its awards, so this season’s crop of winners — all from Broadway shows — beat out contenders from both arenas.

“Spring” bested potential Tony competitors “Curtains,” “Legally Blonde” and “Mary Poppins,” while the Rialto competish for “Coast” included “Frost/Nixon,” “Radio Golf” and “The Year of Magical Thinking.”

League also handed out previously-announced specialty awards to composer-lyricist duo John Kander and the late Fred Ebb (“Curtains”), helmer Michael Mayer (“Spring Awakening”) and legit charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
