Becker feasts on ‘Hunger’

'300's' Fassbender to star as IRA's Sands

Becker Intl. has picked up world sales rights to “Hunger,” the debut movie by Turner Prize-winning video artist Steve McQueen.

“Hunger,” co-financed by Film4, the Northern Ireland Film Commission and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, is an impressionistic interpretation of the last six weeks in the life of Bobby Sands, the IRA hunger striker who died in the Maze prison in 1981.

Michael Fassbender (“300”) will star as Sands. Written by Enda Walsh, pic is being produced by Laura Hastings-Smith and Robin Gutch.

” ‘Hunger’ will be a film with international contemporary resonance,” promised McQueen. “The body as a site of political warfare is becoming a more familiar phenomenon. It is the final act of desperation; your own body is the last resource for protest. One uses what one has, rightly or wrongly.

“What I want to convey is something you can’t find in books or archive; the ordinariness and extraordinariness of life in this prison. Yet also the film is an abstraction in a certain way, a meditation on what it is like to die for a cause.”
