Coin: A variety of Canuck sources fed the pic’s $4 million budget, including Telefilm Canada and the Ontario Media Development Corp. Co-financing came from L.A.-based Echo Lake. Lionsgate acquired pic after its Toronto bow in 2006.
Buzz: Released in spring, the film might not have the legs for a picture nom, but Julie Christie (as the Alzheimer’s-afflicted Fiona) sits on all the shortlists for lead actress consideration. Filmmaker Sarah Polley has some support for her adapted screenplay and, in a longer shot, for her direction.
Kudos: Nabbed Writers Guild of Canada feature and Directors Guild of Canada feature and directing honors as well as the audience award at the Portland and Sarasota fests. Christie’s onscreen husband, Gordon Pinsent, won for actor at the ACTRA awards.
