The worlds of fashion and film have always flirted with each other. Now they’re finally ready to commit.
Elle magazine is replacing Entertainment Weekly as premier sponsor of the Spirit Awards, and rival fashion pub Vogue will have a presence on the Oscar red carpet for the first time.
EW, which supported the Independent Spirit awards for more than a dozen years, decided to move on. But Elle is stepping up and will devote a fashion spread to this year’s female nominees in its March issue and host a swag suite behind the tents.
“Fashion and film influence one another,” says Elle editor-in-chief Robbie Myers. “After a fashion show, the chit-chat is always movie-related, like ‘That was so “The Women” meets “Barbarella.” ‘ ”
Vogue, on the other manicured hand, prefers to tread the red carpet. Editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley will co-host the official Oscar pre-show and, no doubt, comment on the good, the bad and the ugly.
