25 films added to national registry

Additions include 'Oklahoma!,' '12 Angry Men'

“Back to the Future,” “Bullitt,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Days of Heaven” and “Dances With Wolves” are among the 25 American films added to the Library of Congress national registry.

The list was announced Thursday by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. The 25 chosen this year bring the registry total to 475.

All films are eligible for inclusion, and hundreds are nominated by the public each year; those selected are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant.

Others selected this year:

  • “The Naked City” (1948) was filmed on locations in New York, which was a rarity then. The gritty crime drama, which won Oscars for photography and editing, combined slices of several stories and set the pattern for numerous films (and TV series) that followed.

n “Oklahoma!” (1955), directed by Fred Zinnemann, brought the famous musical to the screen.

  • “12 Angry Men” (1957) is Sidney Lumet’s directing debut and offered a textbook example of how to film a drama in a spare, claustrophobic style — largely set in one jury room.

  • “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (1962) was director John Ford’s last great Western. The film shows that the conquest of the West meant the triumph of civilization, embodied in Jimmy Stewart, over wild innocence (John Wayne) and evil (Lee Marvin).

Also added to the registry:

“Tol’able David” (1921), “The Strong Man” (1926), “Mighty Like a Moose” (1926), “The Sex Life of the Polyp” (1928), “Grand Hotel” (1932), “Three Little Pigs” (1933), “Our Day” (1938), “Wuthering Heights” (1939), “The Women” (1939), “Dance, Girl, Dance” (1940), “Now, Voyager” (1942), “The House I Live In” (1945), “In a Lonely Place” (1950), “Glimpse of the Garden” (1957), “Tom, Tom the Piper’s Son” (1969-71), “Peege” (1972).
