HONG KONG — Indian movie conglom UTV Motion Pictures is making a move into Telegu-language pictures with a trio of deals.
Company has signed a two-picture deal with Mahesh Babu, one of the top male stars in the sector which, centered in the Andhra Pradesh region, ranks second behind Hindi-language movies.
In a related move it has struck a two-picture deal with Telegu shingle Indira Productions to co-produce two movies and has already assigned Babu to the lead of one.
Babu also stars in “Atithi,” to which UTV is picking up distribution rights in Andhra Pradesh. Pic is a romancer helmed by Surendra Reddy and co-starring Amrita Rao. Produced by Krishna Productions it is skedded for release in October.
UTV is also testing the waters in the Tamil-language market. In a joint deal with Adlabs Films, company announced in June that it was hitching with Radaan Mediaworks to co-produce films in South Indian languages.
“Mahesh Babu is one of India’s foremost superstars and our association with him, as well as our co-production venture with Indira Productions coupled with our distribution acquisition of ‘Atithi,” gives us a great launch pad in this very exciting market,” Siddharth Roy Kapur, COO, UTV Motion Pictures, said.
