Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia has inked a multi-picture production deal with Star Overseas, the Hong Kong-based shingle operated by athletic Chinese star Stephen Chow.
First pic under the new deal is “Jump,” a hip-hop dance romcom. Pic stars Kitty Zhang as a cleaner who lives a different life by night.
Sony previously handled Chow’s “Kung Fu Hustle” and last month grabbed world rights outside China to his upcoming comedy feature “A Hope.”
“Jump,” to be produced by Chui Po Chu (“Kung Fu Hustle,” “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”) and will lense in China this summer. Sony Pictures Releasing Intl. will handle distribution of “Jump” and all future pics flowing from the deal.
“Asia is producing some of the most exciting new talent,” said Gareth Wigan, vice chairman of Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group. “With Stephen’s superb artistic sensibilities and commercial instincts combined with Sony’s distribution and marketing expertise, the prospects for this collaboration are extremely exciting.”
Sony Pictures Classics will handle “A Hope” in North America.
