Showbox finalizes ‘Ong’ deal

Pic is a sequel to martial-arts actioner

Showbox Entertainment has acquired South Korean rights to “Ong Bak 2” from Thailand’s Sahamongkolfilm Intl., while Edko Films grabbed it for Hong Kong.

Pic is a sequel to the “Muay Thai” martial-arts actioner that put Tony Jaa on the map as a major action star. Original was helmed by Prachya Pinkaew, and sequel is now in production with Jaa himself helming.

Sahamongkol senior VP Gilbert Lim described the Showbox deal as having been completed at “a very good price,” taken to mean a low seven-figure dollar sum. The Korean major, which combines distribution and exhibition capacity, is also committed to giving pic a wide release.

Deals mean that Sahamongkol can count on a coordinated release at the end of 2007 or early 2008 across the key Asian region.
