The Walt Disney Co. said Wednesday its long-awaited Chinese film “The Magic Gourd” will get a theatrical release this summer through China Film Group Corp.
The film is a contemporary adaptation of the 1958 Chinese novel written by one of the most celebrated authors of children’s literature in China, the late Zhang Tianyi.
“The Magic Gourd,” which began principal photography in Hangzhou, China in October 2005 is a joint venture of Buena Vista Intl., the international theatrical distribution arm of The Walt Disney Studios; Centro Digital Pictures of Hong Kong; and the China Film Group.
“We are pleased to announce the movie is finished and on its way to cinemas across mainland China in time for the school holidays,” said Stanley Cheung, executive VP and managing director of the Walt Disney Co., China.
“China is the priority of the entire company, and today’s announcement further demonstrates our commitment to doing business here,” Cheung said. “In addition to bringing more Disney family entertainment content to China, we attach great importance on finding locally relevant and appealing content which complements our existing story values.”
