Online phenomenon announces video awards

YouTube has the content and now it has the awards.

No. 1 viral video site will today announce nominees for the inaugural YouTube Video Awards. Many of the biggest names in viral video, such as lonelygirl15, are expected to be among the nominees.

Company has created seven categories and selected 10 or so nominees from among its most watched videos of 2006 for each.

Categories are most creative, most inspirational, best series, best comedy, musician of the year, best commentary and most adorable.

Voting will be transparent on the site, allowing the community to see up-to-date tallies from Monday until Friday, when voting closes.

“We put this together to recognize the best content from 2006, but we’re really excited because it has a lot of potential for the future as we continue to see new genres and new stars in online video,” said YouTube head of product marketing Jamie Byrne.

Several other Web sites and orgs have organized their own viral video awards in the past few months in an attempt to lay a claim in the nascent medium. YouTube’s version is sure to draw attention given its status as the biggest player in the space by far.
