Recent studio titles set for VOD

Warner Bros. Intl. Television Distribution will see hundreds of its recent movie titles distributed online legally following a pact with Hong Kong’s ViDeOnline Communications. Latter will handle distribution through its 08Media portal, which launched in March.

Deal provides the Netco with multiyear video-on-demand and subscription-VOD rights to Warner pictures including “Happy Feet,” “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” “V for Vendetta,” “Superman Returns,” “The Ant Bully” and “Lady in the Water.” Library titles under the deal include “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Batman Begins” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Headed by Priscilla M. Lu, ViDeOnline aggregates content for distribution on its own portal and for redistribution via Internet service providers, IPTV firms, broadband carriers and mobile telcos.

Company, which has offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Los Angeles, says its initial focus is Asia, specifically China.

In February, it received a $12 million injection from Intel Capital, the venture investment arm of computer chipmaker Intel Corp.

ViDeOnline previously struck a similar content deal with Buena Vista Intl. TV under which Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone and Miramax titles will be available for rent on-demand.

“Making our movie content available to ViDeOnline’s Hong Kong consumers is an important step in our global digital distribution strategy,” said Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, prexy of Warner Bros. Intl. Television Distribution.

“ViDeOnline is committed to working directly with Hollywood studios in protecting their copyright assets and has instituted sophisticated video watermarking, digital rights management and other advanced security measures to ensure the complete protection of copyrighted films and television content,” Lu said.
