Sound editor love ‘Letters’

Golden Reels honors best in sound, music

“Letters From Iwo Jima” won double honors at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, held Saturday night at the BevHilton.

Clint Eastwood’s Japanese-language WWII historical pic took home nods in the dialogue and automated dialogue replacement category, as well as in the sound f/x and Foley category.

“Apocalypto” drew kudos for music in a feature film. “Dreamgirls” was feted for music editing in a musical feature film. “Pan’s Labyrinth” took the foreign film sound f/x and Foley nod.

Television prizes were separated into two major categories — shortform and longform. CBS’ “CSI: Miami” took home two shortform awards for music and for dialogue and ADR. ABC’s “Lost” was lauded for sound f/x and Foley.

Longform awards were handed to Disney’s “High School Musical” for music, the Alphabet’s “Path to 9/11” for dialogue and ADR and TNT’s “Nightmares and Dreamscapes” for sound f/x and Foley.

Animation honors went to Pixar’s “Cars” for feature film and Comedy Central’s “Drawn Together” for TV series.

“The Fox and the Hound II” took the direct-to-video nod, while “Hellgate: London Cinematic” drew the computer entertain-ment gong, and “Deep Sea 3D” was feted in the special venue category. The Verna Fields award for student filmmakers went to “Temerario.”

The MPSE’s career achievement award was presented to Richard L. Anderson, who has edited such films as “Poltergeist,” “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” for which he won an Oscar.

The recipient of MPSE’s most coveted award quipped that sound editors “not only create sounds of the future, we preserve the sounds of the past — including sounds of those pesky dinosaurs I used to work with.”

Eastwood was feted with the org’s filmmaker award.

In accepting his prize, the multihyphenate praised the importance of sound, saying, “Fifty percent of a motion picture is sound. Sound is subliminal. It’s behind you and it’s underneath you.”
