'Dailies' to air weeknights, also on Variety
Movie-centric network ReelzChannel is expanding its program day, adding an edition of its signature “Dailies” program to latenight.
“Dailies Late Night” will air weeknights at 11:30 p.m. on the East and West Coasts starting Monday. Show will be a slightly reworked version of the day’s “Dailies” episode, with more emphasis on interviews with movie stars, directors and scribes.
In addition, ReelzChannel has signed a new agreement with Variety, which will start posting celebrity interviews from “Dailies” and “Dailies Late Night” on its Variety.com website. Those interviews will also continue to appear on ReelzChannel’s site.
“We want to make our content available to as many people as possible,” said Ian Valentine, senior vice president of programming and web content at ReelzChannel. “It’s important to get the info out beyond just the ReelzChannel platform, particularly to the Hollywood community. We’re not distributed by Time Warner Cable in L.A. yet, although we have strong penetration through DirecTV and Dish network. But this is a way to penetrate the market further. And it’s very good for the Academy voters, who are getting savvier and savvier to the online stuff.”
First up Monday: ReelzChannel will focus on an interview with thesp Josh Brolin, who appears in the features “No Country for Old Men” and “American Gangster.” The Brolin interview will be available on the Variety and ReelzChannel sites in addition to “Dailies” and “Dailies Late Night.”
Valentine said the launch of “Dailies Late Night’ comes at the start of kudos season, and fits into the channel’s “Awards Watch ’07-’08” initiative (Daily Variety, Aug. 27).
“This is something we have planned to do for a while,” Valentine said.
It also comes at an opportune time for the channel: With most latenight talkers now dark at 11:30, “Dailies Late Night” could serve as an alternative venue for thesps promoting their Oscar contenders. Valentine, however, played down that strategy.
“Our viewers are avid movie fans and moviegoers, plain and simple, and our target audience is significant in the latenight time period,” he said.
Beyond the Internet, ReelzChannel is also partnered with Variety as a sponsor of its screening series.
