Service failed to generate interest among users

NBC Universal is pulling the plug on its little-viewed DotComedy website, barely a year after the service launched.

After generating decent traffic when it went live, service failed to generate much interest among Web users in recent months. According to Web traffic monitor Alexa.com, DotComedy’s reach plunged 30% in the last three months.

NBC U is expected to fold DotComedy’s existing content — as well as future comedy production — into other Peacock sites. Handful of staffers dedicated to the site are expected to work for other NBC Universal digital properties.

NBC U had hoped DotComedy would turn into a destination site for surfers looking for quick video comedy hits, a la the successful Break.com. It plugged the site on its NBC television network and produced a sizable amount of original content.

But the site never caught on with auds, perhaps because none of its original content ever attained the viral video critical mass needed to drive traffic. None of its clips ever attained the sort of popularity of, say, FunnyorDie.com‘s “The Landlord,” starring Will Ferrell and a foul-mouthed tyke name Pearl.

Shuttering of DotComedy comes in the wake of adjusting its Web strategy to put its content on multiple sites, including the just-launched Hulu.com. It’s believed NBC U execs felt it no longer made sense to produce content for just one site.

NBC Universal execs declined comment.
