Niche DVD specialist fights off Lionsgate sale
Company: Image EntertainmentTitles: Greenwald, CEO; Borshell, chief operating officer Leadership: Greenwald and Borshell — along with longtime CFO Jeff Framer — continue to guide Chatsworth, Calif.-based Image through turbulent times. Last year, the niche DVD specialist successfully fought off a hostile takeover by Lionsgate. And change could be in the works, with David Bergstein’s BTP Acquistions Group in the process of buying out the company well known in the industry for its strong homevid sell-through acumen. The transaction is expected to close in September. Notably, Bergstein also recently purchased ThinkFilm, a company with strong theatrical distribution roots. In the meantime, Image continues to support a full load of titles, with about 50 releases spread through August and September. The slate notably includes the Sept. 18 bow of standup comedy title “Jeff Dunham Spark of Insanity.” This is the follow-up to the comedian’s first release with Image, which sold half a million copies, a rare feat for a title that’s not a feature or TV show. POV: “We’ve worked together for 24 years, and we’ve survived many challenges,” says Borshell. “We are going to continue down the same path as you know today: special interest and comedy DVDs. With BTP, there is no question that we will get into feature film distribution. In the near term, that could double or triple our current annual revenue of $100 million.” See list of profiled execs.
